Club History

Hazlemere Golf Course was in the first instance the idea of Dave Wanstall.  He invited three like minded friends Ron Luzar, Mick Curry, and Reg Carlisle to join him.  He had always wanted to see a golf course in the Hazlemere area and when a parcel of land owned by The Earl Howe Estate (Inkerman Farm) came on the market in early 1981, the opportunity to bring the dream to reality presented itself.

The land went for auction in early 1981 and Dave Wanstall and his friends were successful in their bid.  Wycombe District Council were very supportive of the planning application even though the land was ‘Farmland and within The Green Belt’.  Work on the course started almost immediately and the first members joined in mid 1982. It was finished completely in October when it was fully opened, complete with a spacious and well appointed club house.

It will be obvious from the short time scale of purchase to completion that the land lent itself to the contours of a golf course.  Over the years some major changes have taken place but in the main these have been few and the course retains its original and unique character.

In 1983 the club changed hands and was purchased by Sarit Roy, (who was MD) and his partners Andy Andrews and Harry Carlisle (Reg’s brother).  Sarit was the major shareholder in the golf club for seventeen years.  During the years that Sarit Roy was MD he organised many Celebrity Golf days - Frankie Vaughan, the well known entertainer was a ‘local boy’ and the course enjoyed many ‘show biz’ celebrities visiting, and playing, in The Frankie Vaughan Classic.

In 2000 it was decided that the members be given the opportunity of purchasing the club.  The response was overwhelming and in mid 2000 Hazlemere Golf Club became a ‘Members' Club’ when it was purchased outright by the members.

Whilst Hazlemere is not a long course, some 5900 yards, it offers a considerable challenge due to the hilly nature of the terrain. The course is in an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ in the heart The Chiltern Hills and enjoys wonderful views from the club house and other areas of the course.

In 1986 Luke Donald, currently one of the top 25 players in the world, joined Hazlemere Golf Club as a Junior; he was nine at the time.  He stayed for six years before moving on, and we at Hazlemere like to say it is here that ‘Luke Donald learnt his golf’.

Hazlemere Golf Course offers a unique challenge and a very warm welcome awaits you - so visit us soon and give it a try, you will not be disappointed.
