John Newell wins National Competition

Newell chases his dream with Trophy win

Buckinghamshire’s John Newell made his dreams come true today when he was crowned England’s male handicap golfer of the year – and kept alive his hopes of a date with a star of the European Tour.

“This is absolutely crazy, I can’t believe I have actually managed to win,” said Newell, the vice-captain at Hazlemere Golf Club, after his one-shot victory in the men’s final of the Bridgestone Chase Your Dream Trophy.

He scored net 69 – three-under par – on the Bracken course at Woodhall Spa, where the final was played as part of England Golf Week, the annual celebration of the handicap game.

Now Newell and the next eight players on the leaderboard will make up teams at the Bridgestone Challenge, the English leg of the European Challenge Tour, on Wednesday, 6 September.

Now Newell and the next eight players on the leaderboard will make up teams at the Bridgestone Challenge, the English leg of the European Challenge Tour, on Wednesday, 6 September.

The other qualifiers are: Jacob Scargill (Hanging Heaton, Yorkshire) Neill Jonas (Tilgate Forest, Sussex), Kevin Madden (Walmley, Warwickshire), Michael Durkin (Hurlston Hall, Lancashire), Giles Puckle (Clandon Regis, Surrey), Sam Storey (Windlesham, Surrey), Barrie Harding (West Byfleet, Surrey) and Neil Garbutt (Masham, Yorkshire).

They’ll be joined by nine players from the women’s final, which will be played on Friday, and the best of these teams will play with a star of the European Tour at the pro-am of the British Masters, supported by Sky Sports, on Wednesday, 27 September.

“I was really, really hoping to make the top nine and squeak through, but to actually win is off the scale,” added Newell.

The 42-year-old tax consultant is an avid golfer and was highly motivated by the opportunities of the Chase Your Dream Trophy.

“I liked the title of the trophy and when I saw the ultimate goal was to play in the pro-am of the British Masters, I just had to have a go.”

Today’s round did not start as planned. After three holes the 11-handicapper was five over par and “spraying the ball all over the place.” The turning point was the par five fourth, where Newell hammered a drive down the middle, leaving himself 220 yards to the pin.

Given the circumstances he decided to go for it and was rewarded with a two-putt birdie. Shortly afterwards he chipped in for a birdie two and his round was back on track.

Two Big Charity Events

Adam Blackwell Day

On 26th August David and Ryan Blackwell organised another successful event in the memory of Adam Blackwell and to raise money for the John Radcliffe Oxford Children’s Hospital. Close to 100 players participated, raising a record amount and enjoying the events of the day which included an exhibition from trick shot golfer Jeremy Dale. Thanks to the Club and Members for their support and well done to the Blackwell’s for a great day.

72 hole challenge in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support

The 72-hole challenge was also completed late in July. Members and friends gave generously and many also gave way to the group of golfers completing from 72 to 100 holes on the day.

Run by the “Joy family” for several years, this fantastic event, for a very good cause, raised a record amount this year, over £5600. Well done to all those who completed the challenge.

Captain Pro Challenge

John Dimond and Andrew Harrison took on the Captain Pro challenge aiming for the best performers of the year and to beat Martyn Woodley and Paul Baldock’s leading return of half a point.

Unfortunately they could not defend the usual barrage of birdies with Mike Joy and the Captain securing 4 each and securing the win.

 john dimond and andy harrison

So it all comes down to the final game on 3rd September away at Bushey Hall where a big win by the Hazlemere team would guarantee their first ever league title and a place in the semi-finals. However any other result leaves the door open to the 3 chasing teams.

On Friday 16th September 84 players will participate in the Hazlemere Pro Am. There is still room for one more team, please contact Gavin Cousins or David Forrest if interested.

Captain’s Day 2016

Captain’s Day 2016

Report on Captain’s Day- July 9th 2016

Captain Forrest

On a (thankfully) dry but breezy day close to 150 players took on the challenges of Captain’s Day in aid of Cancer Research UK. Thanks to all our members for supporting the day.

With up to £4750 available for a hole in one, the players were full of hope, only to be dashed by the double cut greens and tricky pin positions. Sadly there was no hole in one on the day, although one of our juniors managed the feat on the 3rd hole the following day (to the same pin position, what a difference a day makes!

Players were served 9th hole snacks at the player’s table and feasted on a BBQ with family and friends at the end of their round. The staff did a magnificent job in meeting the member needs, including serving in the bar until 04.30!

A band of volunteers ensured fair play on the par 3s, manned an all-day reception and processed the scores.  Many thanks to them all.

Most importantly the generosity of our members raised close to £3500 on the day, with more to come.

The main event, a team game where 2 stableford scores counted on most holes, but all 4 on a par 3’s, saw some great scores.

1st place with a score of 110 points were Ricky Cook, Gary Petford, Jordan Holden and Craig Tackley. They won a 4 ball at the Buckinghamshire which they immediately donated to be auctioned for the charity. Details of this have already been released.

1st Team

2nd, 109 points, winning a 4 ball at Harewood Downs were the Kings (Dan, Andy, Kevin and Ben)

3rd , one of 3 teams on 108 points, winning a 4 ball at the West Berkshire were  Steve Morvell, Tom Dearing, Michael Joy and Tom Wooster.

3rd Team

The longest men’s drive on the 7th was Josh Stanners, the longest ladies’ drive was Maria Power and nearest the pin on the 11th Paul Trench. Mike Joy won nearest the pin in 2 on the 18th scooping a 2015 St Andrews Open 18th hole flag signed by Zach Johnson.
Mike Joy            Josh Stanners

There was also a grand raffle with the star prize, lunch for 4 and a 4-ball at the Berkshire won by Josh Stanners.  He became a very popular man! A series of other great prizes helped the raffle raise over £1800. Thanks to Linda Rodgers for her help in enlisting members.

As always we witnessed what a friendly club we have at Hazlemere and of course how challenging our golf course can be.

Captain and Pro Challenge

Martyn Woodley and Paul Baldock took on the Captain and Pro Challenge and in a closely fought match, where they scored a Nett 63, the match was halved on the last hole thanks to a birdie from Mike Joy.

Although there are several matches to come, with the halved match Martyn and Paul take the lead for best performance of the year.

June Medal

Russ Ashmore, Mark O’Donnell and James Anderson won their respective divisions in the June medal.

The Men’s team again took the lead position in the CBL league with a 3-3 away draw at Weston Turville only to follow that up with a home reverse (1-5) against Aldwickbury.

With 4 games left in the regular season before the play offs it is likely that 3 wins will be needed to secure a semi-final place

Captain’s Day

Although we already have over 150 golfers booked on BRS for Captain’s Day there are still a few late tee times left, and one or two spaces to join a team throughout the day.

Club Championships 2016

Club Championships 2016

Congratulations go to all our winners in the 2016 Club Championships.  The weather was not the kindest, especially for the ladies on Day 2. Despite that it was a terrific success.

The course was beautifully presented so thanks have to go to Jane Doyle and all the greens staff particularity to Russell. Additionally there were many members seen out on the course putting in lots of hours of help to tidy up the course on the days leading up to the Championships.  This help is much appreciated.  Over the two days there were also many members who helped to make it such a success, with starting the players off, ball spotting, score collecting and recording, updating the live scoring in the club house and on the course to name but a few.

Thanks must also go to John Morley and Karen Scott. our Handicap Secretaries, for ensuring all the scoring was completed in good time and the BRS updated with the start times for Day 2.

Congratulations go to our new 2016 Men’s Club Champion, Phil Clark

In 2nd and 3rd place were Josh Stanners and Tom Wooster

Any Men interested in participating in matches should contact the Vice Captain Paul Doyle.

Mixed Away Weekend

The expression ‘herding cats’ springs to mind following the super May Bank Holiday Away Weekend when 36 stayed at Old Thorns in Liphook Hampshire, for the annual away mixed weekend.  Fortunately the weather was kind to us and the golf course was a great challenge.  Lots of fun and some reasonable golf was had by all and all the couples are now looking forward to the next one.  Where will Gilly arrange next time?  It will certainly be hard to beat this one!

Ladies’ Captain’s Update

Competition Winners

Well done to Debbie Bowyer, Barbara Prole and Linda Poore for winning their respective divisions in the May Medals.

The Leslie Stephens’ Rose Bowl was won by Barbara Lewis, with Dorothy Chilton coming second and Nancy Forrest coming third.

The Crystal Bowl was won by Nancy Forrest with Jane Doyle in second place and Gilly Stimpson in third.

The Ladies unfortunately lost in the first round of the Bucks Shield after some confusion over a handicap which resulted in one of the home leg the matches being awarded to Harleyford 10&8  which resulted in them having a better ‘goal difference’ and so went through to round two.

After a really good win away at Berkhamsted in the Mail on Sunday Round 4, the team unfortunately lost at home to Denham in a closely fought match.  It is believed this is the first time Hazlemere Ladies have got to round 5 so that is a really good achievement.  Well done to everyone who played in any of the teams.

Ladies’ Away Weekend

The Ladies have just come back from a lovely Bank Holiday Away Weekend at Sandford Springs.  22 ladies enjoyed two rounds of golf, a lovely hotel and plenty of laughing.

Vets’ Update

Following defeat in their opening match of the year at Stockley Park in April, the Vets’ team gained a win in the return home match winning 4.5 to 1.5.  Since then the home matches against Little Hay finished in a 3-3 draw followed by victory over Chiltern Forest by 4-2.  An exciting away match at Huntswood saw all 6 pair’s matches taken to the last hole, with the team holding their nerve to win 4.5 to 1.5. Well done to all the teams on the recent unbeaten run.

The results of the monthly medal and mid-month stableford and eclectic events are recorded on the website.  A Texas Scramble was also held during May attracting 25 members – congratulations to the winning team of Geoff Beal, Peter Stapleton & Paul Williams.

Thanks go to Margaret Beal and the Ladies’ Seniors for arranging the 2nd mixed event of the year – The Iris Roy Trophy – another Texas Scramble format event which is always enjoyed.

Upcoming is the ever-popular Vets’ Summer Dinner in the Luke Donald Suite on Friday 10th June.

The Vets’ Section is always keen to recruit new members from within the Club you just need to be a very young 55 and you will have to part with £5 to the Treasurer Alan Wells. You will be guaranteed a warm welcome.
