Putting - Struggle with Distance Control?

Here is a fun practice game that will help you.

The feel of distance control cannot be taught.  Imagine the boy or girl bowling or throwing a ball for the first time.  They new nothing about how far to throw or the 'feel'.  They had a look, made a judment and reacted with a throw.  If the ball went too far they would adjust the throw and have another go.

Practice Game - Set Up

Putting Distance Control - Set Up
  • Lay 2 clubs down 2 feet behind the hole to create a backstop.
  • Lay another 2 clubs down one either side of the hole and level with the front of the hole.  These should be one foot apart with the grip ends pointing at each other.

Practice Game - Rules

  • Start from 3 to 4 paces from the hole.
  • Putt 5 balls at the hole.
  • If you hole a ball you get 10 points.
  • If the ball stops level or beyond the hole, but short of the backstop, you get 5 points.
  • If you hit either of the shafts or stop short of the hole deduct 2 points.
Once you have mastered this distance play the game from 5 different distances from the hole to enhance your awarness and focus.
